Corsets: 5 Tips for First-Time Buyers
Have you never owned a corset before? Have you always dreamed of trying one on, but you don't know how it works? Well, here are some tips on buying a corset for the first time, whether it's for yourself or someone else.
1) Fit
Generally, a woman's steel corset size will be 10 cm less than her natural waist size, so if you naturally have a waist size of 71 cm, a 60 cm corset will fit. The only exception to this rule is our "Instant Shape" range, which is available in dress sizes. Dress sizes vary considerably from brand to brand, so we recommend checking your waist size even when buying an instant shape. After all, they are still fitted garments, so it is important to find the right size. We list all the measurements on each of our models to make sizing 100% clear.
If you are buying for yourself, measure honestly. A good corset should not leave you with unsightly lumps or bulges. It should be comfortable when it is in place, supporting you without crushing you, so do not be tempted to opt for a size too small for the love of vanity. It will not flatter you like one that really fits!
If you are buying for a loved one, it is wise to consult the person you are buying it for before making the purchase. If you do not want to spoil the surprise, their best friend should be your source of information.

2) Comfort
A corset made from a good pattern is more comfortable than you think. Wearing one for the first time can be a new sensation, but many of our customers quickly get used to the feeling, we often receive feedback on how supported and confident our customers feel when wearing their corsets, due to the quality of our garments, there is also a growing trend of women replacing their bras with corsets because they find them much more comfortable.
Regardless of the top fabric used in the construction of a corset, a good corset should always have a breathable twill lining, it is the only fabric that will be against your skin when you wear your corset... unless you have chosen to wear yours over a blouse or shirt.
For more comfort on our Waist Taming and "Expert Waist Training" corsets, you will also find additional "Hip Gores" or "Hip Panels". Gores and panels are 2 different solutions to ensure an extra touch at the bottom of your corset, it gives the corset more room to fit comfortably over the top of the hips.
3) Quality
Although in these difficult times, it can be tempting to shop for a good deal, it is
worth considering that a well-made corset is an excellent investment. Not only will a quality item last longer, but it will also be more comfortable (see above).
A good corset will be made of strong and sturdy fabrics, and the layer closest to your skin should be made of natural fibers (rather than synthetic). There are many cheap corsets available online, the main differences between Univers Corset garments and these "under €20" corsets are detailed here:
- Univers Corset uses multiple layers of fusion and lining to ensure strength, many very cheap corsets will be made from a single layer of fabric and will tear when you stretch
- We have developed our models over many years to create what we think is the. Corset "Best Ready-to-Wear Fit" available.
- All Univers Corset garments are made with Spiral Steel Boning, which allows the corset to fit perfectly to your body, no matter how the corset must fit the shape of your body. Cheaper corsets will often be made using plastic boning or flat steel. Plastic boning is suitable until you heat it up too much with body heat. Then, the boning will permanently deform. Some people prefer flat steel boning because it makes their corset more rigid. However, when you tighten the waist of a corset made with flat steel, the ends of the bust and hip bones naturally move away from your body.
- All Univers Corset corsets are also delivered with a modesty panel. This allows you to hide or show off your back, depending on your preferences.
- All our corsets have garter loops and bra strap loops as standard
If you need to save money, we advise you to check the Univers Corset Sale section (under Offers on our website), sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Facebook to access the Corset of the Day offers as they happen.
4) Taper
There are two main types of corsets, Underbust and Overbust. Overbust corsets fit most body types, and everyone can wear an Underbust. However, if your bra cup size is DD or larger, you may like the extra support provided by an Overbust, it is worth considering a Waist Taming corset or an Expert Waist Training corset.
An Underbust corset would classically be more practical to wear daily. Underbusts are not as heavy as their Overbust counterparts and allow a little more flexibility.
5) Function
Corsets are extremely versatile. They have been in fashion for hundreds of years and are used to reduce the waist, worn as outerwear and appreciated by women who like to dress up.
If you are looking for an alternative to Shapewear to wear under clothes, try to find a design that does not have trims, hoops or embellishments. The sleeker the design, the easier it will be to hide under your everyday outfit.
Instant Shape & Waist Taming corsets tend to be designed as outerwear, these corsets are available in a multitude of different fabrics, looks and styles, often with sleeves and other features to complete your look.
And of course, if you are looking to "dress up", you have probably already seen the designs you like ;)
Once you have chosen the perfect corset, have fun! A good corset does not only give you a more flattering silhouette; it adds drama and panache to everything you wear and gives you more confidence when you wear it. They are very fun to wear, and if they are gifts, you can watch the wearer have fun. It's a win-win.
