Corset Lengths: Which Style and Cut Are Right for You?
We love our corsets at Univers Corset, and we especially love their versatility. They can be used for waist training, for special occasions, for original outfits, and for powerful shapewear.
Since there are so many different practical uses for corsets (and so many different body types to wear them), they come in several different lengths, styles, and cuts. If you are new to corsets and don't know which one is right for you, here is what you need to know.
Let's start at the beginning: What is a corset?
There are many garments that look like corsets. It is useful to know that there are several categories, including hook-and-eye corsets (also called cinchers), steel-boned corsets, and bustiers. Here is the breakdown of each of these categories:
Cinchers: These are underbust garments that generally use latex or other compression fabrics to provide compression and can be adjusted by moving the hooks to a second or third row. They come in different lengths; shorter styles are generally better suited for training sessions or for petite people, while longer styles offer greater coverage and better compression of the entire torso.
Bustiers/underwire bras: These styles are overbust and offer bust support and waist slimming all in one. They are generally worn as undergarments, especially for strapless dresses. Some styles also make outerwear and flirty costume pieces.
Steel corsets: This is the traditional style of corset, which significantly slims the waist thanks to flexible steel bones in the bodice and a lace-up back that can be tightly cinched. While bustiers and corsets can also sometimes use steel bones, this is generally an essential feature of lace-up corsets.
For the rest of this article, we will mainly refer to lace-up corsets when we talk about length, although we will occasionally refer to the other types.

The short corset, or "Waspie", underbust
Short lace-up corsets, sometimes called "waspies", are very effective at creating a well-defined waistband effect. Since they cover less of the lower abdomen and emphasize the natural waist, you can achieve a very dramatic hourglass result.
Among our favorites are mesh corsets and short satin or cotton corsets. All these styles slim the front of the abdomen while leaving the hips free.
The Hourglass Angel HA201 Underbust Waspie Mesh Corset is a sexy mesh piece that is the most breathable short corset option. But it still uses the power of steel bones, a waist band, and a lace-up back, allowing you to create maximum curves.
Short corsets are a sexy way to add definition under your everyday clothes and can be used as part of a continuous waist training routine. Short corsets can also be worn as outerwear, as they easily pair with a thin fabric top. So, if you want to dress up for Halloween or make a statement, a short style may be your best choice.
Long corsets
The long corset is the ideal solution if you want your corset to have greater slimming power. It will define your natural waist like the short corset, but it won't stop there. Longer corsets offer compression and shaping from under the bust to the hips, covering the lower abdomen and preventing the formation of love handles.
Long corsets are generally preferred for shapewear due to the overall compression they provide, which stimulates heat and perspiration over a larger area of the torso. This can be particularly effective in fighting love handles and bulges. It is also the corset that best corrects posture.
This is why long corsets are highly appreciated for everyday outfits and professional attire. They can be easily worn under a wide variety of styles, from casual tops to jeans and pantsuits.
The Hourglass Angel HA202 Underbust Cotton Corset is a long corset that covers and compresses the entire torso. It helps smooth problem areas, especially the stomach, hips, and back, and perfectly hugs the silhouette for a smooth hourglass finish. Since its lining is cotton, it is also one of the most breathable corsets and is soft to the touch.
Latex corsets also come in longer styles that are effective as shapewear under your clothes, as well as for a waist training routine. In general, steel corsets will give you a more dramatic slimming effect and may last longer, depending on how often you wear them.
Curved top corset and straight top corset
You may notice that corsets are available with a straight or curved top cut. Shorter corsets often have a straight cut, but longer corsets can also have this cut.
In general, curved corsets offer better coverage of the entire torso and better bust support than straight corsets. What you prefer depends on the effect you are looking for.
If you want extra support for your bust and coverage close to your bra line, the curved top is the solution. If you prefer to have a little more freedom of movement around the top of the corset, if you want a dramatic waist, and if you do not need as much coverage for the lower abdomen and just under the bust, the straight top is the solution. However, it should be noted that a corset with a straight top will also offer extra bust support and posture correction.
The Hourglass Angel HA206 Underbust Mesh Corset is a sexy corset similar to the mesh waspie, but its curved underbust offers more support for the upper part of the torso and allows you to create a fuller bust. It also extends further down the entire abdomen, giving you full coverage and slimming.
Longline overbust style bra
If you want an overbust style with the slimming effect of a corset, the longline bra is the solution. They come in several lengths, depending on your slimming needs.
If you mainly want superior bust support with a strapless top or dress, a steel-boned bra that offers more support and coverage around the bust will give you firm support that does not move. It is similar to a normal strapless bra that you are used to, but it offers extra control around the bra line and lifts your breasts, for a fuller neckline. And since there is no traditional bra strap, you will no longer have to worry about the "bra bulge" at the armpits and back.
If you choose a longer style, you will get the benefits of a longline bra and a slimming effect on the waist. This style of shapewear is ideal for wedding outfits, as it offers a smooth and supportive base under many dress styles.
The Va Bien Bridal Shapewear Longline Convertible Bustier uses a combination of side boning, a hook-and-eye back closure, and soft support cups to create a flexible and sexy garment that hides problem areas around the abdomen while offering firm bust support, making it an ideal choice for formal outfits.
How to find the ideal corset
Although there are many choices when it comes to choosing the best corset, the decision should not be difficult to make once you have determined what you are looking for. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when looking for the ideal corset.
What occasion will you wear it for? If you are dressing up for a special occasion, a full-bust corset will generally be a good choice, although some women appreciate the slimming power of low-bust styles. If you opt for a steel-boned corset or even a latex waspie, make sure to try it on before the big day, which will allow your body to adapt to the sensation it provides. Cinchers and steel-boned corsets are the best options if you want to start a daily waist training routine.
What are your problem areas? Most people benefit from a slimmer waist, but if you need to cover more of the upper back or lower abdomen, you will probably want to choose a garment that covers these areas.
What result do you want to achieve? If you want a unique piece with a dramatic touch, a short waspie-style corset will do the trick. If you want better coverage and slimming of your entire torso, a longer corset inside the bust will give you the best results. And if you want to get better results during your training sessions, a cincher will be your preferred garment. In general, note that steel lace-up corsets will give you the most powerful slimming results.
What style do you prefer? Sometimes, the choice of a corset comes down to personal preference. Some people like the different corset styles, especially the colorful training bands. Others want to be able to wear a cincher or corset discreetly under their clothes. Others still want the corset to have a dramatic effect, such as the sharp results of a waspie, or the way different corsets can be worn as outerwear.
